UPR-CRCC Education Thematic Axes


The UPR Center for Resilience to Climate Change (UPR-CRCC) advances an educational vision that connects climate science, STEM learning, and community resilience through inclusive and interdisciplinary initiatives. Its educational thematic axes provide a guiding framework for student development, public engagement, and curricular innovation, with a strong emphasis on climate literacy, equity, belonging, and locally relevant learning experiences in Puerto Rico.

1. Climate Literacy and STEM Awareness

UPR-CRCC promotes foundational understanding of climate change through workshops and educational experiences for students, families, and communities. These activities support progressive climate learning and strengthen connections to STEM fields.

2. Inclusion, Equity, and Representation in STEM

The Center advances participation in STEM through diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, including activities focused on girls and young women, visible STEM role models, and training to foster more inclusive learning environments.

3. Belonging, Retention, and Persistence in STEM

A core pillar of UPR-CRCC is strengthening students’ sense of belonging as a pathway to retention and persistence in STEM. The Center supports mentoring, networking, peer support, and academic-community engagement.

4. Curricular Innovation and Interdisciplinary Learning

UPR-CRCC promotes foundational understanding of climate change through workshops and educational experiences for students, families, and communities. These activities support progressive climate learning and strengthen connections to STEM fields.

5. Community Engagement and Public Education

The Center extends climate education beyond the university through workshops, school partnerships, youth activities, public events, and collaborations with community-based organizations.

6. Student Support, Well-Being, and Learning Infrastructure

UPR-CRCC promotes inclusive and resilient learning environments through tutoring, mentoring, climate training opportunities, and academic support spaces designed to strengthen student success.
